The popular Netflix series Bridgerton has caught the attention of viewers not just for its captivating storyline, but also for its unique integration of familiar melodies into the Regency romance setting. Unlike other period dramas that simply drop in modern pop tracks, Bridgerton takes a different approach by featuring classical reinterpretations of popular songs.
The show, created by Chris Van Dusen and composed by Kris Bowers, heavily relies on balls and dances as important elements of the narrative. To capture the essence of these scenes, the soundtrack showcases pop tunes transformed into 19th-century classical pieces, mostly covered by the Vitamin String Quartet.
This quartet is renowned for adapting contemporary music for stringed instruments.
In addition to using the Quartet's covers, Bowers also created his own instrumental version of Celeste's "Strange." The soundtrack, completed during the quarantine period, was released on Christmas Day alongside the series' first season. Bowers expressed his gratitude for being part of the show and making music with remote musicians, stating that their collective efforts brought heart and emotion to the score.
The official soundtrack, featuring the covers and Bowers' instrumental rendition, is now available for sale and streaming.
Alongside the soundtrack's release, a review of the series and an interview with showrunner Chris Van Dusen discussing the show's unconventional approach were also published.
Some of the featured covers on the Bridgerton soundtrack include "thank u, next" by Ariana Grande, "Girls Like You" by The Naked and Famous, "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes, "bad guy" by Billie Eilish, and "Wildest Dreams" by Taylor Swift, performed by Duomo.
